I got up at 10 today. Early for someone who isn't getting to sleep until the birds sing. I could’ve slept longer but the phone decided to ring. As I’ve not been sleeping too well lately, I’d had the sense to move my phone into another room but I could still hear it ringing.. just.
Didn’t get there in time though, The message on the answerphone was from my bank’s fraud detection team. I’ve made a few large withdrawals and purchases over the last week or two so figured that they were just checking. They’ve done it before.
But no.
The guy on the phone was trying to confirm some transactions with me. “Have you topped up your phone lately?” What phone network do you use?” I was quite confused really. But he was just trying to figure out the last time I’d used my card. Thing is, the last time I’d topped up my phone was last Tuesday or something..!
Since then.. or.. sometime over those next days, some lovely person has been using my card details on betting sites and buying London travelcards or something.
In fact, according to my statement, they’ve spent at least 500quid.
They’ve managed to stop all the transactions that appeared fraudulent, I just have to keep checking my statement to make sure it all adds up and nothing odd shows up on it.
I also have to spend the whole week without a debit card. Ah. Fun for me..
Nothing like this has ever happened before. In fact, it’s pretty scary. I’m really careful with my details so I haven’t come to any conclusion as to how they managed to get ahold of them! The last time I used my card was a cash withdrawal on Saturday, I didn’t check my balance then, I can’t usually read the displays properly anyway, I’ve heard of card cloning from ATMs or something so, did it start then?
The bank man said it was probably an internet interception but.. ah I don’t know. I never respond to those phishing scams, I haven’t really bought anything online with my card lately. It doesn’t make sense at all
I’m quite impressed that the bank has managed to pick it up. I do check my statements online often as I like to know how much little money I have..
So, this is just a warning to you all to please be careful.. Oh, and if you feel like sending me some money to my Paypal account...
